Gospel of Loukas (Luke)

Parable of the lost son197

11And he said,

There was a man who had two sons.
12The younger said to his fater, "Father
give me the share of the property
that will belong to me." So he divided
his resources between them. 13And not
many days later the younger son
got all his things together and went off
to a far country and there he squandered
his substance by riotous living.
14When he had spent everything he had,
there came a severe famine throughout
that country, and he began to be in need.
15And he went and hired out to a citizen
of that land, who sent him to his fields
to feed the pigs. 16He longed to be fed
on the pods the pigs were eating, but no one
gave him anything. 17He came to himself198
and said, "How many of the day laborers
of my father have bread left over and here
I'm starving and dying. 18I will rise up
and go to my father and I will say to him,
'Father, I have sinned against heaven
and before you. 19I am no longer worthy
to be called your son. Make me
like one of your hired hands.' "20And he rose up
and went to his father. While he was still
far off, his father saw him and was filled
with compassion and tears fell on his neck
and he kissed him. 21And the son said to him,
"Father, I have sinned against heaven
and before you. I am no longer worthy
to be called your son." 22But his father said
to his slaves, "Quick, bring out the finest robe
and put it on him, and give him a ring
for his hand and sandals for his feet,
23And bring the fatted calf, slaughter it,
and let us eat and celebrate, 24for my son
was dead and he came back to life,
he was lost and he has been found."
And they began to celebrate.

25Now the older son was in the fields
and as he drew near the house he heard
music and dancing. 26And he called over
one of his slaves and asked what was going on.
27He told him, "Your brother is here,
and your father has slaughtered the fatted calf
because he took him back in good health."
28He was angry and did not want to go in,
but his father came out and pleaded with him.
29Yet he answered and said to his father,
"Look, so many years I have served you
and never disobeyed an order of yours,
and for me you never gave a young goat
so I could celebrate with my friends.
30But when this son of yours came, who ate up
your property with prostitutes, for him
you slaughtered the fatted calf." 31And he said
to him, "Child, you are always with me,
and everything that is mine is yours,
32but we must be happy and celebrate.
Your brother was a dead mand and he lived
and he was lost and has been found."
